Three Killed and Dozens More Missing in Explosion in British Jersey
3 people died and about a dozen others have yet to be found after an explosion occurred in a block flat on Jersey Island, north French high sea, Saturday morning, December 10, 2022.
"We currently have, I regret to say, three fatalities," Robin Smith, Jersey Side State Police Chief, said at a meeting of journalists.
The explosion occurred just before 0400 GMT and the fire was extinguished. The service will continue to search for survivors overnight, Smith said.
He confirmed firefighters had been invited to the property on Friday night before the explosion after the public gave a report of gas. He did not comment on the trigger for the explosion, and explained it would be investigated.
Smith explained a three-story building, which was near a pier in the island's capital, St Helier, had collapsed entirely.
He explained that 20 to 30 people have been evacuated and two of the injured have received hospital treatment.
Jersey is a side of the British Empire with a community of more than 100,000 people.
