A UN Peacekeeping Force Soldier from Ireland Was Shot Dead in Lebanon
An Irish soldier died of a gun shooting while living a vision of a UN peacekeeper in Lebanon, Wednesday (14/12) night time on the spot.
About two other soldiers were injured and are currently undergoing treatment in hospital.
In a confession launched one day later, the Irish Defence Force confirmed the veracity of the news. His faction explained that a full investigation is now underway.
"It is with deep regret that Óglaigh na hÉireann [the Irish defence force] can confirm the death of one of our peacekeepers in a serious incident in Lebanon last night," the confession read, as taken from Reuters.
"Another Irish member of the Federation of Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon [UNIFIL] was in a serious state after the operation following the incident," they said.
While the other four soldiers who took sides in the convoy did not suffer some injuries.
His faction explained that the incident occurred when a group of UNIFIL soldiers conducted a convoy towards the capital Beirut using two armored vehicles.
However, suddenly the onslaught of shooting occurred and until now it is not known who released the shooting.
Irish Defence Minister Simon Coveney, who is on a face-to-face visit to the UN Security Council in New York, explained that he would meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday (15/12) to review the onslaught.
The passing of soldiers who lived the vision of peace brought loss to the Irish people. President Michael D. Higgins also reminded his people of the huge risks encountered by some of his soldiers who shoulder jobs in conflict-torn countries.
"As a people, we are absolutely delighted with our unbroken record of peace care with the Federation of Nations. But we must not forget the dangers that follow this task," Higgins said.
