Biden Holds Emergency Meeting of Western Allies on the Sidelines of G20 Bali Summit After Missile Hits Poland
President Joe Biden held a "precarious" face-to-face meeting with the G7 and several NATO leaders in Bali, Indonesia wednesday morning (11/16/2022) for discussions after NATO member Poland explained that a missile hit a Polish hamlet near the edge of Ukraine on Tuesday night, (11/15/2022) that killed 2 people.
Western emergency face-to-face generally occurs in Europe or the United States but this has happened on the recreational island of Bali, plus at the interval of the schedule of the G20 summit with Indonesia being the host.
It is not yet known whether some of the schedules for the all-day G20 summit will be postponed, changed or undone.
As the Associated Press reported on Wednesday (11/16/2022) Biden was immediately woken up last night by staff while in Indonesia for the G20 summit, then contacted Polish President Andrzej Duda Wednesday morning to say "deep mourning" for the loss of life of the Polish people.
Biden on Twitter pledged "the United States' full support and funding for the investigation that Poland is already conducting," and "reiterated the United States' strong loyalty to NATO."
Meeting at a large round table in a ballroom at his hotel, US president Joe Biden serves several G7 leaders, which include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the European Union, along with presidents from the Council of Europe and the PM of NATO-allies Spain and the Netherlands.
Biden replied "no" to reporters who asked if he would give an update on the situation in Poland.
A confession from the Polish Foreign Ministry recognized the missile was made in Russia.
But Polish President Andrzej Duda was more wary of the missile's origins.
Duda explained some of his officials don't know exactly who fired it or where the missile was made.
President Duda explained the missile was "likely" Russian-made, but it still needs to be verified.
If verified the missile was fired by Russia, it could be the first time since Russia's onslaught into Ukraine fell in the NATO country.
The basis of the NATO coalition is the concept that the onslaught on one member is an onslaught on them and can elicit the same military response as per NATO's article 5.
