History and Twibbon Links World Mental Health Day, Every October 10
In 1992, the World Mental Health Federation led by the then deputy secretary general, Richard Hunter, created World Mental Health Day.
They have no precise purpose other than to advocate for overall mental health. To say the least, it is an uphill climb to change a large number of bad and dangerous habits that make difficult situations worse for people.
The world has a number of mental health problems that are not being treated properly. There is a struggle for public funding for treatment in France, inhuman treatment in New Zealand, and an overall ignorance of what mental health really is. WFMH knows that they need to act on a global scale to resolve the global crisis. During the first three years, there was a worldwide two-hour television broadcast via US information agency satellites. The studio is located in Tallahassee, Florida and is a useful way to get their advocacy message across to the world. They had participation from Chile, the UK, Australia, and Zambia, while Geneva, Atlanta, and Mexico City recorded segments for the broadcast.

The theme of the first World Mental Health Day was 'Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services Worldwide' in 1994. 27 countries submitted feedback reports after the campaign and there were national campaigns in Australia and the UK. Continuing this momentum, WFMH board members around the world organize events according to the day and their growing popularity among government departments, organizations and civilians.
From 1995 onwards, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) arranged for the translation of planning kit materials into Spanish, French, Russian, Hindi, Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic. As time went on, more and more countries got involved and, consequently, so did civilians as the perception of mental health became more synonymous with human rights. The theme for World Mental Health Day 2022, set by the World Mental Health Federation, is 'Make mental health and well-being for all a global priority'.

For more than 70 years, we have worked to ensure that mental health is treated on a par with physical health. Mental health issues exist in our lives, families, workplaces and communities, impacting everyone. We must do as much as possible to prevent poor mental health – as individuals and as a society. World Mental Health Day is also an opportunity to talk about mental health in general, how we need to take care of it, and how important it is to talk things out and seek help if you are struggling.
